Thank you for your interest in Grist: A Journal of the Literary Arts!

We read for our ProForma Contest every spring and for general submissions from late summer. We publish an annual print issue, as well as regularly publishing work online.

Simultaneous submissions are acceptable as long as we are immediately notified if the piece has been accepted elsewhere. We do not consider previously published work. We do not consider work from those currently or recently affiliated with the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. As things stand, we are also not interested in work produced with the aid of generative AI.

Please submit all work in Times New Roman, size 12 font.

For more information on our submission guidelines, please visit: www.gristjournal.com/submissions

Although we are predominately a literary journal, we love to publish original visual art alongside the written work on our website. We pay $10 for each piece of accepted artwork.

What are we looking for? We consider original work by the artist in any medium, including painting, drawing, photography, graphic illustrations, photos of installations or sculptures. Our tastes are wide and varied--we like the weird and abstract, clear and comprehensive. If you make visual art, we want to see it. We are not accepting AI-generated visual art at this time. Guidelines Please submit no more than 5 pieces per submission. Give each image file the correct title as you would like it to appear online, if accepted. Upload as .jpg format, at the highest resolution possible at no more than 100K. Fine Print Our fee is the minimum possible to cover our submittable costs. Copyright Info We hold first serial rights for the material we publish, with the copyright reverting back to the author upon publication. Contact gristeditors@gmail.com
